Council Tax Bands Explained
How bands work
Every property in England is assigned a band (A–H) based on what it would have been worth on 1 April 1991. Not its current value.
Scotland uses bands A–H based on 1991 values. Wales uses bands A–I based on 2003 values.
Find your band
Check your council tax band at gov.uk/council-tax-bands. Enter your postcode to see your band and compare with neighbours.
Challenge your band
If similar properties nearby are in a lower band, you can challenge yours through the Valuation Office Agency (VOA). It's free to do. Warning: they can also move you UP a band, so check carefully first.
