Council Tax Discounts & Exemptions
Single person discount — 25% off
If you're the only adult in your home, you get 25% off. Students, severely mentally impaired people, and live-in carers don't count as adults for this purpose.
Full-time students — exempt
If everyone in the property is a full-time student, no council tax is due. If one person isn't a student, the student discount still applies (treated as if they don't live there).
Disabled person reduction
If you or someone in your home is disabled and uses a wheelchair, or needs an extra room, you may qualify for a reduction to the band below yours.
Council Tax Reduction (CTR)
Low income? Apply through your local council for a reduction of up to 100%. Each council has its own scheme. Usually available if you're on Universal Credit, JSA, or ESA.
Empty property — varies
Unfurnished empty properties may get a discount for the first few months. After that, many councils charge 100% or even 200% (premium for long-term empty homes).
