How the calculation works

The calculator starts with the average Band D rate for the region or nation you choose. It then multiplies by the statutory band ratio (six-ninths for Band A, eighteen-ninths for Band H, and so on). If you tick disabled person band reduction, the band drops by one before any other adjustment.

Single person discount removes 25 per cent. Student exemption zeros the bill. Council Tax Reduction takes a percentage off the remaining figure. The annual total is then split into 10 or 12 equal monthly amounts depending on your selection.

Limitations

Regional averages mask wide local differences. A Band D in Westminster is £971; a Band D in Rutland is £2,538. The calculator uses an England-average of £2,392 for the “England” option. For an exact figure, look up your council's 2026/27 budget paper or check your bill.

The calculator does not include parish precepts, which can add a small amount in some areas. It does not model the second home premium or empty home premium.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this estimate?
The calculator uses the average Band D rate for each region or nation, then applies the statutory band ratio and any discounts you select. Your actual bill depends on your specific council, which can be much higher or lower than the regional average. For an exact figure, look up your address at gov.uk/council-tax-bands and your council's website.
Why is the monthly figure different on the 10-month and 12-month options?
Most councils default to 10 instalments running from April to January, with a two-month break. You have the right to ask for 12 instalments instead. The total annual bill is identical, but spreading it over more months reduces each monthly amount. The calculator shows both so you can budget either way.
Can I combine multiple discounts in the calculator?
Yes. Select every discount that applies. The calculator applies disabled-band reductions first (drop one band), then percentage-based discounts on the remaining bill, then any Council Tax Reduction percentage you enter. This mirrors the typical council billing order.
